Welcome to Wat Dhammadharo

The Buddhāvāsa Precinct | เขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ

On 25 January 2026, His Eminence Somdet Phra Mahawirawong, Secretary of the Dhammayut Order, representative of His Holiness the Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana The Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, presided over the Consecration Ceremony of the Buddhavāsa Precinct. Over 120 Buddhist monks were in attedance from across Australia, Thailand and beyond – largest gathering of Thai Buddhist monks in Australia to date.

His Highness Prince Chalermsuk Yugala of Thailand graciously presided over the ceremonies on behalf of the lay Buddhist community.

HE Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, was also in attendance during the ceremonies.

Over a thousand devotees attended the three-day celebration, from 24-26 January 2026. Wat Dhammadharo expresses its thanks and gratitude to The Royal Thai Embassy Canberra, all monastic and lay volunteers, donors and devotees for your support throughout the years and for the many years to come.

The Buddhavāsa Precinct is a fine example of traditional Thai Architecture in Australia’s multicultural landscape. In 2007, our Monastery began an initiative to build a Buddhavāsa (Temple complex comprising a Stupa, Uposatha Hall, Cloister and Multipurpose Hall) adjacent to the existing building. The Buddhavāsa Precinct was dedicated to His Late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand (1927-2016) on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty’s Ascension to the Throne (2006) and His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary (2007).

Our Monastery

Wat Dhammadharo is the first and only Thai Buddhist Monastery in the Australian Capital Territory, and since 1992 has been the heart of the Thai-Australian Buddhist community in the Canberra region.
