Our New Temple Precinct | เขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติ

Buddhāvāsa means “The Buddha’s Quarters”. It serves as the centre of Buddhist devotion and a place to hold religious services and community functions.

The Buddhāvāsa precinct at Wat Dhammadharo comprises for main structural elements;

1) the Stupa,

2) the Uposatha Hall,

3) the Cloister, and

4) the Multi-purpose Community Hall.

To date, this is the most complete Thai temple complex in the Southern Hemisphere. The Architectural forms and motifs were designed in Thailand, and Glass-Reinforced Concrete (GRC) casts fabricated in Australia and assembled on site. This allowed assemblage in blocks over the steel framework on site, rather than traditional brick and mortar. This is the first time a significant piece of Thai Architecture has been built in this way. The success of this construction has led the way to numerous temples in Thailand using similar techniques.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX) (1926-2016) was a working monarch who dedicated a life of service for the Thai people. He envisioned, developed, and supported over 8,000 Royal projects from Sustainable agricultural practices, Rain seeding initiatives, Dams, Flood collection basins to Science, Music and the Arts.

It is our intention to dedicate the new Stupa as a monument to His Late Majesty as a sign of the Thai community’s gratitude to him, no matter how far we are from our homeland.

His Late Majesty’s 60th Anniversary of the Ascension to the Throne in 2006 and His 80th Birthday Anniversary in 2007 provided an auspicious occasion to initiate a Buddhāvāsa project at Wat Dhammadharo.

The longstanding, close and dynamic relationship between Australia and Thailand, which celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2022, makes this project a joint venture of a deeply spiritual nature, further strengthening the bonds between the two nations. The Buddhavasa showcases the uniqueness of Thai arts and Architecture in the capital city of Australia.

เขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติ มีความสมบูรณ์งดงามตามแบบสถาปตยกรรม และศิลปกรรมไทย ประกอบ ด้วยศาสนสถานดังนี  ๑) พระมหาธาตุเจดีย์ ๒) พระอุโบสถ ๓) ระเบียงคต และ ๔) หอประชุมอเนกประสงค์

ถือเป็นงานสถาปตยกรรมไทยเชิงศาสนาที่ สมบูรณ์ และครบองค์ประกอบที่ สุดในเขตขัวโลกใต้

การออกแบบชิ้นส่วนสถาปัตยกรรม และลวดลายประกอบ ได้รับการออกแบบจากทีมสถาปนิกไทย และทำ การหล่อขึ้นรูปเป็นชิ้นส่วนคอนกรีตเสริมใยแก้วสำเร็จรูปในประเทศออสเตรเลีย จากนั้นจึงนำ มาประกอบรวมเป็นอาคารในพื้นที่งานก่อสร้าง ทำ ให้สามารถนำ มาติดตั้งบนโครงสร้างเหล็กได้ ต่างจากการที่ใช้วิธีการก่ออิฐฉาบปูนตามรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมไทยเดิม งานก่อสร้างเขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรตินี้จึงเป็นครั้งแรก และเป็นก้าวสำ คัญในงานก่อสร้างสถาปัตยกรรมไทย(วัด)ที่ใช้วิธีการนี้ ความสำ เร็จในงานก่อสร้างเขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติในครั้งนี้ จึงได้ถูกยกให้เป็นกรณีศึกษาสำ หรับเทคนิคงานก่อสร้างวัดสมัยใหม่ของประเทศไทย

เนื่องในวโรกาสงานฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๖๐ ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๙ ในโอกาสมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา ๘๐ พรรษา พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๐ และฉลองสิริพระชนมายุ ๘๔ พรรษา พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๔ พุทธศาสนิกชนชาวไทยและสถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทย กรุงแคนเบอร์รา ประเทศออสเตรเลีย ได้ร่วมใจจัดสร้างเขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติ เพื่ออุทิศถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร ณ วัดธัมมธโร กรุงแคนเบอร์รา

พระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร ได้ทรงมีพระบรมราชวินิจฉัยในแบบสถาปัตยกรรมของเขตพุทธาวาสเฉลิมพระเกียรติ และพระราชทานให้สถาปนิกปรับแก้ไขโดยสถาปนิกผู้ออกแบบคือ อ.วนิดา พึ่งสุนทร ศิลปินแห่งชาติสาขาศิลปะสถาปัตกรรม มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร

โครงการเขตพุทธาวาสเป็ นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมอันทรงคุณค่าของชาติไทย และเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความสัมพันธ์อันใกล้ชิดระหว่างชาวไทย และชาวออสเตรเลีย และใช้เป็นศูนย์ศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาและวัฒนธรรมไทยสำหรับชาวไทย และชาวออสเตรเลีย รวมทั้งชาวต่างชาติอื่นๆ ซึ่งประเทศไทย และประเทศออสเตรเลียได้ฉลอง ๗๐ ปี ความสัมพันธ์อย่างเป็นทางการในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๕
