ระเบียงคตเป็นอาคารเชื่อมจากพระอุโบสถที่ล้อมรอบพระมหาธาตุเจดีย์เฉลิมพระเกีรติ และทำหน้าที่บ่งบอกบริเวณเขตพุทธาวาส ทำให้มีลานประทักษิณรอบองค์พระมหาธาตุเจดีย์เชื่อมต่อพุทธสถาปัตยกรรมทั้งหมดเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน

การประทักษิณเป็นการปฏิบัติของชาวพุทธตั้งแต่ครั้งพุทธกาลที่สื่อถึการน้อมถวายความเคารพอันสูงสุดแด่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าโดยเดินวนขวารอบพระพุทธองค์สามครั้ง

สมัยต่อมาชาวพุทธได้ปฏิบัติในรูปแบบเดิมต่อเจติยสถานที่เป็นตัวแทนของพระพุทธเจ้า เช่นพระสถูปที่บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ต้นพระศรีมหาโพธิ์ และพระพุทธปฏิมา

จะเห็นชัดในวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนาที่ชาวไทยจะร่วมฟังพระธรรมเทศนาในวัด ถือศีลอุโบสถสวดมนต์ ภาวนา และประกอบการเวียนเทียน ซึ่งการเวียนสามรอบให้ระลึกถึง พระพุทธคุณพระธรรมคุณ และพระสังฆคุณ

In ancient India, a common practice was to circumambulate around the Buddha three times in a clockwise direction to show deep respect.

Today, Buddhists circumambulate around representations of the Buddha such as Stupas, the Bodhi Tree, and Buddha Images as a devotional and meditative practice.

This is often seen on major Buddhist festivals in Thailand, in the practice of “Wien Tien” where devotees circumambulate around a stupa or the Uposatha Hall while holding flowers, incence and candles as offerings to the Triple Gem; recollecting the virtues of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha with each of the three rounds.

Our cloister is an enclosed space surrounding the Stupa and continuous with the Uposatha Hall for this very purpose.
